The song banned by NASA

Astronauts don’t have days and nights like we do on earth, so they need some help regulating their sleep. Turns out, it takes a whole team of engineers down on earth to rouse NASA’s elite from their slumbers. In this Popcast, hear about the NASA tradition of “wake up songs” from Mission Control, including the one song that went too far.

Written and produced by Eliza Smith, narrated by Eliza Smith and Jacob Winik, with editorial help from Emily Saltz. Listen to more audio from the NASA Collection on Pop Up Archive, or read Terry Watson’s fan letter to “The Ledge.”

1. Grab an embed code

On any public Pop Up Archive item page, the “Embed Codes” button lets you choose the embed code of your choice (read about the differences). If your site is oEmbed-enabled (such as through this WordPress plugin), these transcript players help search engines reliably crawl your transcripts like any other text.

2. Add it to your site

Paste the code you want into your site’s HTML. You can also add the transcript player to blog platforms like Tumblr (using their HTML editor) and WordPress (using an HTML embed plugin like this).

3. Listen and share

Pro-tip: Using the Twitter bird button to the left of any transcript line, click to share a quotable moment on Twitter.

Try it out for yourself. Click around this interactive transcript for the latest Popcast, “Bob Hope and Atomic Bill.”
