In conversation with Studs Terkel, Greek architect and urban planner Konstantinos Doxiades predicts the future of cities and their roads. Speaking with confidence in 1968, he asserts that in 30 years (by 2008) urban cities will have merged into an “ecumenopolis:”

Ecumenopolis is the universal city connecting the megalopolises together.

The uniqueness of individual regions will be in danger, he feels, not because of these unified cities, but because of technological monopolies.
