This weekend, audio storytellers of all stripes — from established broadcast players to podcasting newbies — will descend upon Chicago for the Third Coast Conference to mingle and discuss their craft. (For the uninitiated, Third Coast has been referred to as the “Sundance” of audio.) The Pop Up Archive team will be there in force, and we’d love to see you!

And of course, there are awards: of the 12 winning pieces, we present two which can be found in Pop Up Archive’s own public archive. Congratulations to State of the Re:Union and Radio Diaries on making the cut! The details of their awards will be revealed during the weekend.

In the mean time, read the descriptions of the winning SOTRU and Radio Diaries stories below and listen on Pop Up to get a sampling of two of many incredible audio stories to be highlighted during the Third Coast festivities.

The Hospital Always Wins (State of the Re:Union)

“Back in 2004, staff producer Laura Starecheski visited a state mental hospital in Queens, New York, called Creedmoor. She stumbled on to a mystery there that would take almost ten years to unravel. In this special hour, we bring you just this one story: an artist stuck in the catch-22 of a lifetime.”
