When actor Zero Mostel was under trial by the House UnAmerican Activities Committee in 1955, the committee asked what he was doing at an anti-HUAC meeting. Mostel replied: “What if I did an imitation of a butterfly at rest? There is no crime in making anybody laugh.”

Established at UC Berkeley’s Bancroft Library in 2010, the Magnes Collection of Jewish Art and Life holds a number of rare and newly digitized recordings. Among these recordings is a historic 1956 speech from Golda Meir, then Foreign Minister of the State of Israel, who became Israel’s fourth Prime Minister in 1969.

Speaking to the Israel Bonds Development Corporation of America, Meir says: “No sooner did we [Israel] declare our independence then we were in the midst of a very bitter struggle for our very existence.”
